North Carolina's 2nd Largest Wilderness Area at Linville Gorge

Linville Gorge, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is located in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina.

This wilderness area encompasses the Linville River and its gorge, which cuts through the rugged terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Linville Gorge is relatively close to the Grandfather Mountain area so you can definitely see both of these places in one day.

Linville Gorge is not part of a national park but is instead designated as a wilderness area. It is managed by the US Forest Service rather than the National Park Service.

Wildlife Diversity in Linville Gorge

Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is home to a diverse array of wildlife, adapted to its rugged terrain and varied habitats.

Most notably, it's home to the endangered peregrine falcon, which has been successfully reintroduced to the area after facing extinction in the eastern United States.

These large birds are frequently encountered in the more open areas of Linville Gorge, such as meadows and clearings, where they forage for seeds, insects, and plants.

Eastern Timber Rattlesnake: This venomous snake inhabits the rocky slopes and woodlands of the gorge. Although these snakes play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent populations, I would still rather not run into them!

It's definitely a good idea to wear your boots or at least closed-toe shoes.
