Can I Fly Without a Real ID?

The short answer is yes! I'll tell you how!

Even if you don't have your REAL ID, you can provide additional documentation such as a passport when going through TSA security. A valid passport will work in place of a REAL ID.

When does the REAL ID take effect?

The REAL ID policy will go into effect May 2025. So, you have time to get to the DMV to get your new card.

Is there a cost difference between a REAL ID and a regular ID?

The good news is that there is no cost difference in obtaining your REAL ID versus getting a regular driver's license. You will have to take a new photo but no tests are required.

REAL ID Versus Enhanced ID

A REAL ID and an Enhanced ID are both forms of identification designed to enhance security, but they serve different purposes and have distinct features:

REAL ID:

  1. A REAL ID is a type of identification card that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005.
  2. It is primarily used for official purposes, such as boarding domestic flights and entering federal buildings.
  3. Requirements for obtaining a REAL ID include presenting documentation to verify identity, Social Security number, and residency.
  4. REAL IDs are issued by state departments of motor vehicles and typically have a star marking to indicate compliance with federal standards.

Enhanced ID:

  1. An Enhanced ID, on the other hand, is an optional state-issued ID that provides both identity and citizenship verification.
  2. It includes all the features of a standard state ID or driver's license but also allows for enhanced border-crossing privileges.
  3. Enhanced IDs are equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology or other secure features that facilitate easier border crossings between the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
  4. Unlike REAL IDs, Enhanced IDs are issued by select states and are not mandatory for federal purposes such as domestic air travel.

While both REAL IDs and Enhanced IDs enhance security and verification capabilities, REAL IDs are mandated by federal law for certain activities within the United States, while Enhanced IDs are optional and provide additional benefits for international travel to specific countries.
