Rothenburg ob der Tauber Things to See

Nestled in the heart of Germany, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, is a town straight out of a storybook. Rothenburg's old town feels like it is a living museum, a place where history comes to life.

The well-preserved medieval architecture is nothing short of a masterpiece. Stroll along the town walls, visit the Markusturm, and admire the intricate carvings on the buildings.

Rothenburg may be small in size but is colossal in charm! With a population of around 11,000 residents, this quaint medieval town retains an intimate atmosphere, where the cobblestone streets wind past half-timbered houses and historic landmarks at every turn.

Despite its modest size, Rothenburg draws an astonishing number of visitors each year. Tourism is the lifeblood of the town's economy. Annually, Rothenburg welcomes over 2 million tourists from around the globe.

Even in the midst of its popularity, Rothenburg manages to maintain its authenticity and gives its guests a journey into the past with a glimpse of its rich German history.

Das Plönlein Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Of course, you have to get your picture at the picturesque and iconic square of das Plönlein. It is known for its charming, fairy-tale-like appearance, characterized by a distinctive half-timbered house, flanked by two towers, that stand at a slight angle to each other.

This idyllic scene, often featured in postcards and photographs, really captures the essence of Rothenburg's medieval charm. When you stand in this little spot, it's like you're peeking into a different time period.

The Best Way to Get to Rothenburg
The best way to reach Rothenburg is by train. From major cities like Munich or Frankfurt, you can board trains that offer scenic routes through the picturesque German countryside.

I love trains for the very reason that I get to see more of the countryside! Also, the train station is super tiny and absolutely adorable! I loved its small town charm.

Upon arrival at Rothenburg's train station, you can easily navigate your way to the town center. It's a beautiful, easy walk so there's no need to arrange transportation if you're able to walk and carry your bags.

If you're visiting Germany with a rental car, driving to Rothenburg allows you the flexibility to stop along your way and explore more of the countryside at your own pace.

Even though cars give you more autonomy over your schedule, you have to find parking. Traveling by train may be your most convenient and enjoyable option for experiencing the enchanting beauty of Rothenburg.

Famous German Dessert

In Rothenburg, "snowballs" refer to a delightful local treat rather than an actual snowy activity. These confections are also known as "Schneeballen" in Germany.

Schneeballen are round, pastry-like desserts made from strips of shortcrust pastry dough that are twisted together, creating a spherical shape resembling a snowball. They are then deep-fried to a golden brown and dusted with powdered sugar.

The result is the perfect combination of crispy layers on the outside and a tender, flaky interior.

Rothenburg is particularly renowned for its Schneeballen, and you'll find a variety of flavors and toppings to choose from, ranging from the classic powdered sugar to chocolate drizzle, nuts, and more.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Location

In 1968, the whimsical film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" brought enchantment to audiences worldwide, with the picturesque little town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria, Germany, serving as a captivating setting.

Starring the charismatic Dick Van Dyke and the delightful Sally Ann Howes, the movie's production in Rothenburg captured the town's medieval charm, adding a magical backdrop to the adventures of the iconic flying car.

The quaint cobblestone streets and well-preserved medieval architecture provided the perfect atmosphere for the film's fantastical tale, creating a timeless cinematic experience for generations to cherish.

Was Harry Potter Filmed in a Castle

While Harry Potter wasn't primarily filmed in a castle, there were several stunning castle locations featured throughout the film series.

One particularly magical spot that resonates with the essence of Harry Potter is Rothenburg in Bavaria, Germany. Although not directly associated with the Harry Potter films, Rothenburg's medieval allure and picturesque streets make it feel like a scene straight out of Hogwarts.

For Harry Potter fans, exploring Rothenburg can evoke a sense of stepping into the story, as they wander through streets that seem plucked from the pages of J.K. Rowling's magical universe, even if the final filming of Harry Potter didn't take place there.

The town's architecture, with its timber-framed houses and narrow cobblestone alleys, creates an enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley.

Although filming was done in Rothenburg for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1" (2010) and Part 2 (2011), the scenes didn't make it into the final versions of the movies.

Where to Stay in Rothenburg

To be such a small town, there are many options for where you can stay. I recommend arriving towards the end of the day so that you can walk around and eat dinner and stay the night.

It will like be busy, but that's okay! If you choose to stay overnight, then you can wake up early and take a walk before the little town gets hit with a bunch of tourists. This time makes for the perfect opportunity for you to get your beautiful pictures without the crowds.

Towards the end of your walk, stop in at a little coffee shop before heading to the train station. The station is about a 15 minute walk from the heart of the old town.

Where I Stayed in Rothenburg
I love my stay at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch. It's a traditional style guesthouse with a view of the das Plönlein right from my window.

When you check in, you will receive your key and the attendant will direct you to your room for the night. Depending on where your particular room for your stayed is located, you may find yourself strolling across the charming street to another building where your room is located.

The following morning you can find breakfast back in the main building where you checked in.

Ratstrinkstube Clock Tower

The Ratstrinkstube Clock Tower is a significant landmark known for its intricate clockwork. Dating back to the 14th century, the tower served as part of the town hall, with its name translating to "Councilor's Tavern."

The clock tower stands at nearly 200 feet (60 meters) tall and features a distinctive Gothic architectural style, characterized by pointed arches and ornate details.

One of the most striking features of the Ratstrinkstube Clock Tower is its astronomical clock, which was added in the early 17th century. This elaborate clock mechanism not only tells the time but also displays the phases of the moon and the position of the sun and stars.

Aside from its functional aspects, the Ratstrinkstube Clock Tower also holds cultural significance for the town of Rothenburg. It serves as a symbol of civic pride and a reminder of the town's medieval heritage.

Today, the clock tower remains a popular tourist attraction. You can even climb its winding staircase for panoramic views of Rothenburg's charming Old Town and surrounding countryside.
