How Strict is Delta Airlines with Carry On Baggage Size

Baggage Fees: 1st Checked Bag is $35

Delta aims to accommodate passengers' carry-on needs, but we have to do our part in being mindful of bag size limits. We're all trying to fit our stuff on a plane with limited space so there's only so much extra grace that Delta can give us.

For everyone flying Delta Comfort and Main Cabin on US domestic flights, Delta allows you to have your first checked bag at $35. To bring a second checked bag, you will have a $45 fee. It's always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the most up to date policy before your air travel to prevent any additional charges that you could have easily avoided with a little preparation.

If you don't have to bring that second bag, you can automatically save that expense by packing a little less. Keep in mind that overpacking on your first bag is also a mistake. Even if your bag is within the size limitations, Delta can hit you with a pretty hefty fee for any overweight bags.

The size of the personal item should be able to easily fit under the seat in front of you. These items are things such as a camera bag, a large purse, a brief case, diaper bag, etc. The combined length, width, and height of your carry-on dimensions should not exceed 45 inches. I prefer my personal item to be a soft-sided bag.

Free Carry-On Bag

The size of the plane is a factor in how big your cabin bag may be. Be mindful too if you have a connecting flight to your final destination, a smaller piece of carry-on luggage is a good idea. You don't want to get held up at the check-in counters or have to checked your carry on baggage if it exceeds the maximum number of allowable linear inches.

Remember, Delta's carry-on allowance also extends to special items like small musical instruments or assistive devices. To avoid any hassle when boarding your flight, be sure that you comply with the Delta carry-on baggage policy before the day of your flight.

Laptop Bag and Other Essentials

Delta allows passengers to bring one free carry-on item and one personal item, such as a laptop bag or small backpack, onto the aircraft. Delta doesn't charge for carry-on items even for economy flight fares. However, it's crucial to ensure that these additional items meet the airline's size requirements to fit comfortably in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Exceptions for Military Personnel

Delta Airlines offers a generous baggage policy for military personnel, recognizing their service and dedication. Military members traveling on Delta are allowed special privileges, including waived baggage fees and increased weight allowances for checked luggage.

This policy ensures that military personnel can travel with the necessary gear and personal belongings without incurring additional expenses. Additionally, Delta provides flexibility for military personnel who may need to change their travel plans due to deployment or other service-related reasons.

Navigating Size Requirements and Restrictions:

Delta's carry-on size requirements are typically around 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including handles and wheels. It's crucial to measure your bags before heading to the airport to ensure they meet these specifications and avoid any extra charges.

Weight Limits and Oversized Bags

While Delta doesn't have specific weight limits for carry-on bags, they must adhere to maximum size restrictions to ensure they fit in the overhead bin. Oversized bags may incur additional fees, especially if they exceed the total dimensions allowed by the airline.

Domestic and International Flights

Whether you're flying domestically within the United States or internationally to destinations like Puerto Rico, Central America, or South America, Delta's carry-on policies remain consistent.

Tips for Smooth Travel

1) Measure your bags before you head to the airport to avoid surprises at check-in.

2) Consider investing in a lightweight laptop bag or backpack to stay within weight limits.

3) If you're unsure about your bag's size or weight, contact Delta or check their website for guidance.

4) Be prepared for limited overhead space, especially on smaller planes or when flying on Delta Connection flights.

Especially considering limited overhead space on some flights, watch that maximum weight to avoid extra fees on your first bag. Checking Delta's website or any other major airlines is the best way to prevent unwanted bag fees.

For me, I never want to travel with more luggage than I can physically take care of myself, and this includes lifting luggage.
